"It does not matter whether
medicine is old or new,
so long as it brings about a cure.
It matters not whether theories
be eastern or western,
so long as they prove to be true."
Jen Hsou Lin, DVM, PhD
Alternative Medicine
At Mountain Veterinary Hospital, alternative medicine may be
included in your pet's therapy. It can be used alone or with conventional
treatments. The alternative
medicines we work with are acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Tui-Na (Chinese
massage/manipulation), and
nutritional supplements. We do not have training in homeopathy or chiropractic
medicine. If you have a regular veterinarian, we can act as a
"referral vet" where you bring a copy of your pet's records and any pertinent
radiographs and we will keep your
regular vet updated on what we are doing for your pet.
Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture
The conditions that are more commonly treated are:
 |
musculoskeletal (arthritis, ligament/tendon injuries,
geriatric problems) |
 |
asthma |
 |
behavioral |
 |
chronic infections (immune system support) |
 |
allergies |
 |
neurological (including epilepsy) |
Not all cases with the same problem respond the same or are
treated the same. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, one looks at the whole
animal (history and other signs) and not just one symptom or disease.
As with conventional medicine, some patients don't respond as well as others,
but this is not dependant on the severity of the problem. In modern China now,
doctors are trained in both western medicine (surgery and antibiotics) and
Traditional Chinese Medicine (herbs and acupuncture), realizing that each has
its own strengths and weaknesses depending on the condition and patient.
