Chinese Herbal Medicine is a highly complex system of diagnosis and treatment using combinations of herbs, minerals, and plant and animal extracts. These herbal formulas may contain from one to over a dozen different ingredients, depending on the complexity of the condition being treated.
Though these herbal formulas can come in the form of teas, powders, tablets, tinctures, or syrups, at Mountain Veterinary Hospital we primarily use the tablet form. Chinese herbal formulas can be used alone or in combination with many types of Western medications, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and pain medication.
We either use formulas manufactured in this country, or the Plum Flower® brand traditional formulas, which are manufactured in China, undergo rigorous testing of their ingredients, are in compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP), and have been certified by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. This is important because dietary and herbal medications are subject to the same regulations as pharmaceuticals in Australia, but in the United States they are not.
