Amanda, Hospital Manager

Amanda was born in Kansas City, MO and moved around quite a bit with her family before finally settling in Bellingham in 1985. She began volunteering at the Whatcom Humane Society in her senior year of high school and got hooked on animal welfare.

After adopting a dog that required corrective surgery for hip dysplasia, she found her way to Mountain Veterinary Hospital where she found her dog to receive excellent care. She started working part time for Mountain soon after, starting out as Kennel Staff. Amanda continued to work part time for both the Humane Society and Mountain until her graduation from Western Washington University when she went to work full time for the Humane Society for 4 years as the Animal Care Supervisor and the Animal Behavior Program Supervisor.

As a child when asked what she wanted to be, she usually said either a horse or a veterinarian. In high school, she discovered a passion for Physical Anthropology. At Western, she discovered she had no scientific aptitude and so majored in painting. She has a BA in Fine Arts, specializing in Painting and Drawing. She has sold numerous pet portrait commissions, participates regularly in the Chalk Art Festival, has painted animal murals at both the Humane Society and the Ferndale Library, has donated many paintings to assorted auctions, and has work hanging at the Humane Society and Mountain Veterinary Hospital. She would love to have more time to paint, but often finds herself just too darned tired to stretch a canvas. …Plus she would have to clean the basement as that’s where the studio is located.

Amanda returned to the Mountain Veterinary Hospital family in the fall of 2005. She has been promoted from Kennel Staff to the role of Office Manager, or at least that’s what they let her believe. She loves making a difference in the lives of pets and their people, helping one to help the other, and tries to personalize everyone‘s visit to the clinic. Being on first name basis with clients is one of her favorite things about Mountain Veterinary Hospital.

You will notice she rarely wears anything but Halloween scrubs and will discuss her home’s Halloween decorations at length with anyone brave enough to initiate that conversation.  She and her girlfriend share their home with 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 snake, 1 tortoise, and fish.
